January 9 1910

Clear & warm, wind South to S.E.

Bathed all the children and changed underwear.

Fed last of millet hay last night and had to feed fodder this morning.

Old Jersey looks fine.

Hubby cleaned out stove pipe at school as best he could alone.

Helped Hubby start calf-shed by gathering materials.

Hubby blames me for his not scooping some paths at school. School topics are rather unhealthful here.

Made some pink white and chocolate fondant candies.

  1. Spent the day in Tijuana with the kids. We walked over the border to have lunch and sight see.

Had our picture taken with a TJ Zebra which is a painted donkey. Priceless. Julia bought a turquoise ring she has wanted for several years. We had lunch at the Cesar Hotel, home of the original Cesar salad. I was a bit afraid it would be touristy and weird. It was WONDERFUL. Very fancy with table side service all fresh ingredients. Beautiful decor, amazing vintage pictures on the walls and the cleanest bathrooms in Mexico.

Waited an hour at the border to get back but a great day all in all.

Relaxing at home now. Looking forward to another day off tomorrow. I may be a little more productive.

  2. Had to get my homework done because I slacked off all week!

Enjoyed my time with my friend last night but found out that I was neglecting my honey, even though he said it was fine...it was when we spoke and the longer he stayed home alone things changed and he didn't want me to feel guilty for forgetting to take him to his meeting. We talked it out this morning and he is feeling better about the rest of this week, Well actually today as we are trying to focus on each day as it comes.
Today found the girls coming home, it is nice to have a little break but I love to have them home. The adjustment time is getting much shorter and it is so nice to see the positive changes happening in their behaviors since all of the schedule changes started.
It is so hard to see the poor choices that adults make can have such an effect on the little ones. We are doing the best we can and that has to be enough.
Sounds like my friend Marcie is coming in from Colorado tonight, a nice surprise as I thought she was going to be here tomorrow and the girls came home with "homemade haircuts". Marcie is my hairdresser/friend/former roommate...we hope that she can fix the uneven bangs - thankfully they aren't so short she can't fix them.
Richard got the house cleaned while I was gone and it was nice to come home to. He finished our room today and Trenton cooked dinner (hamburger helper but it is a start) - it was good! and so we have dish duty since he made the dinner. LOTS of laundry to do and still have to finish the last half of a page of homework. It is on unemployment and the effects on society so this was a nice break from talking about the unemployment.

Back to homework before finishing off the night snuggling with kids on the couch with a movie.

  3. Birthday cake and blueberry pancakes with the friendlies for breakfast.
    Nice!

Jack and Amelie provided plenty of cuteness for our entertainment while we cleaned up and visited. Nicole & Jake (William's family) headed out, and the Mintun Taybiner crew busted out a good pile of late christmas and early birthday prezzies (Alicia, Amelie & Baby Mintun are all February).

Fun stuff! We played with our gifts, shared the latest stuff making us laugh on the internet, and then took to the sunshine on the deck. William made us paninis while Dana cooked the manta ray he brought back from Japan. They're sort of like sweet, chewy french fries- dipped in mayo. Actually really good!

The rest of the afternoon was spent visiting, catching up, and was pretty perfect. We left later than we meant to, of course, and had an uneventful drive home.

  4. Sunday, January 9th
After a 5-hour drive, we returned home from Nevada today. Spent the last part of the day in bed. I was exhausted and dehydrated from our weekend.

Friday, January 7th- Scotty, Mark and I arrived in Hawthorne right at 6pm. We met Tim and Chris at the motel, The Holiday Lodge. We settled in to our motel room, got dressed and went out to eat. We opted for dinner from Safeway. After a chilly tailgate party in the Safeway parking lot, we headed for Joe’s. Tim and Chris had already set up the stage so all we had to do was tune up. Mike Reilly, Mama Sally, Warren, Ginny…they were all there. Town seemed quiet, the bar wasn’t an exception but we still played a couple of good sets and managed to drink a fair amount of whiskey and beer. I met a few colorful characters; all of them in the ladies room. One gal I met admired my dress, called me “old school” and then proceeded to tell me how much she hated girls. She showed me her fist. “I just punched a girl at the bar down the street; my knuckles are all red and swollen, see?” I offered to get her some ice and then upon her refusal, excused myself into the bathroom stall. We left the bar close to 2am and walked down the frozen sidewalks back to our motel. We stayed up until almost 3am, snacking on almonds, Amy’s cookies and water.

    Saturday, January 8th
It’s Joy’s birthday today. She shares the date with Elvis Presley.
We woke up to knocking. At first we thought it was Chris and Mark trying to wake us up and then realized that it was birds in the roof. Stupid birds, I could have slept ‘til noon, but I guess 8am would have to do. The Burton Brothers met us for breakfast and then followed us to Fallon. They had left Sac at 6am to join us on our adventure in Nevada. We drove straight to The Overland Hotel via a thrift shop or two and got our rooms. I love the Overland. It was built in 1908. (Two years before these journal entries of Julia’s) There are about 18 rooms in the hotel. They are all small. The floors are painted a glossy green, the beds are brass. The walls are brick and bare. There are sinks in every room, but a shared bathroom down the hall. I especially like room no.2, it is my favorite. Downstairs, there is a restaurant and a saloon. The restaurant cooks Basque food, including rocky mountain oysters and sweet breads. We ate at the restaurant. Mark got the Rocky Mountain Oysters, Scotty got the chicken, and so did Tim. I got the fried trout. Our friend, Desert Dave got the bill and insisted on paying for all of our meals, all 9 of us! How generous! The saloon is right next door. Smoky as heck but the bartenders are always friendly and they make great Bloody Marys, though their specialty is a drink called the Picon Punch. I’ve had one or two in the past and they will punch you straight to bed. Photos of patrons past and present cover the walls and brassieres adorn the antlers of many taxidermy heads, from elk to buffalo. It’s the best bar in town as far as I know and we always have a great time here. After an hour nap, I got dressed and went down stairs. We played a 3 hour set to a full house. Hogtied, Humdinger, Heartaches by the Number; all part of the 45 song set. We drank more whiskey than the night before and washed it down with numerous beers. Why I do this kind of drinking, I do not know. The Beulligs showed up, including Toni, who was recently diagnosed with bone cancer. She is in her third round of chemo and radiation. Considering her situation, she looks great. We went upstairs to our rooms around 2am again. Tim crawled to his room. Scotty got the spins. I fell asleep immediately.
We managed to make good money this weekend; at least enough for another plane ticket. We’re all going to get together this Wednesday to discuss the state of the band fund, upcoming shows, our trip to Europe, Denver, Joshua Tree. We have a lot to discuss. We had a great time in Nevada.
