January 29 1910

Snowing all day. Cold wind all ways.

Kansas is 49 years old today.

Arose first. Hubby tired out. Pounded tin pans till 10 and only got cake, popcorn and –un–fermented grape juice!

Gus seems sweet on his new bride. For her sake I hope he never forgets to be.

Hubby went to town. Bathed Freddie. Trimmed and braided both girls hair. Did a little washing.

Saved up all the boards hubby gave me for wood. Hubby churned for me. Minnie didn't know how butter was made.

Chored.

Mother Moehlman died 22 yrs ago.

  1. Today was particularly hard as we found out yesterday some news that we knew was coming but didn't know when to expect it. The unemployment ran out for me and I have no prospects for income. I am still waiting for the 1099 form from school so cannot do my taxes and bank account is negative. I have, thankfully, not put my last unemployment check in the bank as it is going to (barely) cover my portion of the rent and we are just going to have to figure out the rest when we can. I have stepped up my job seeking, looking at jobs that are outside of my "normal" scope and applying for EVERYTHING suggested to me by career builder. There is a job fair coming up on February 2 so hopefully something will come of that. I have also decided to make an effort to sell Mary Kay again, this time for REAL instead of a great way to get a discount on my products :) I have an email out to my former director and am going to go from there. I have business cards and some stock, not much but it is at least something to work with - it is more than enough to get us out of the hole if I can come up with creative ways to market it. Feeling bad about this whole thing, Richard and I went on a bike ride - almost 6 miles round trip...it was pretty good for two out of shape people, one of which is a heavy smoker, and neither exercise regularly. We felt much better afterward, though by bottom is sore - the seat is NOT comfortable, I am going to have to fix that as soon as possible as with this new money development the bike might be the main mode of transportation! Was able to get a nap in before going to see Richard get his 3 year chip and now I am supposed to be doing homework - so I am going to go and get that done before I get to bed and start another last minute homework day tomorrow - shame on me.

  2. Awoke early and made lemon ginger scones with Jack.
Let Dana sleep in, as he's feeling poorly.

Found I was out of onions when I started my clam chowder in the crockpot, so cleaned up to run a few errands. Went first to the Green Living store that's going out of business- so the owner can focus on contracting. Turned out he was someone I recognized from the past- tho I can't place the connection. He remembered my name, and asked if I 'had married someone from LGS'! Boy, he defintely hasn't been in our lives for AWHILE. Turns out, he was a great resource for cheap no-voc paint, and also for SMUD rebates when we replace our electrical panel & wiring, furnace, and tankless hot water heater. Confused about whether I should buy my paint there- they'll be closed by the time I actually paint, so no going back for more if I've miscalculated! Hmmm...

Dropped of more signed papers at the realtor's and stopped by the grocery store. Started up the clam chowder when I got home, and cooked up leftovers for lunch. Had intended to start purging the attic today, but after lunch it was time to gussy up and head over to The Hangar for the Alkali Flats recording session. Oh well!

Found a friendly vibe at the studio, and had some nice visits. Took pictures, grazed at the delicious pot luck, and really enjoyed the music. I became quickly addicted to a magazine of Sasha's, Garden & Gun, and read it almost cover to cover. It's a Southern magazine, and I find myself missing the South more and more over the last few years. Just this week I started seriously considering retiring there.. must talk to Dana about this. Anyway, things from South are very familiar and comforting to me.
In the magazine I found an American surrealist painter I must look up (Noel Rockmore), and a Texas author of which I'm sure I'll want to read his entire catalog (John Graves). Some mouthwatering recipes, too!

I left the studio around dinnertime to tend to my soup and my boys. The clam chowder, my first attempt, was thinner than I wanted. The recipe had assured me blending the potatoes would do as well as adding a thickener, but.. no. It was flavorful and delicious, yes, but next time I'll thicken it. Dana decided to stay home from the third night of the festival, as he was still feeling bleh. I guess I could have gone (we did not have a babysitter for the eve, and had decided one of us would represent socially), but I was content to settle into some PBS with my boys. I didn't feel too badly about it, as we had paid for three days of tickets. I realize my monetary support is not always as wonderful as the energy of my presence, but sometimes it has to suffice.

  3. Spent the day at home. First Saturday in months we have not had any shoots. Deep cleaned the house at a leisurely pace. only finished about half of my list but decided to be happy that I was at home enjoying my space. Walked to African assistance thrift store and found many treasures. I found a set of french china that I LOVE! white with swirly edges and 8 each plates and desert plate. Perfect. Also a lovely 8 piece set of cut crystal sorbet glasses. I also bought 4 crystal salt cellars. Sounds like its time for a dinner party.

Mike came home and we had a simple dinner followed by a double feature of Social Network and Despicable Me. Good day.

Ace was nominated as the leader of the year at his fraternity chapter.I am a proud mama. I am proud with or with out the nomination actually.

Julia is making art buttons to raise funds for her Thailand trip. It has been riveting watching the process for deciding what moves her and what she thinks will sell. Oh the balance of art vs. marketing. A big lesson for one so young.
