January 21 1910

Clear and cool. Biting N.W. Wind.

Took Julia to school. Hubby tidy'ed up the house while I was gone. Did most of ironing.

Helped husk three rows corn, west of alfalfa patch. Old Milly got cold; had to come home before rows were done. Corn badly iced in. Took Pet (horse) after Julia. Hubby emptied big corn box into calf pen while I did most of evening chores.

Got needle book as an ad from S. N. Higinbothan.

  1. Beautiful day outside.

Went to get my hair done. Had a coloring mishap. It is kind of blue...except for the parts that are yellow. As Mike said "ad some pink and you are rainbow bright" Have a damage control appointment on Tuesday. I think it is funny that the third Monday in January is known as "Blue Monday" I see this as an opportunity to start a new Blue Monday tradition of Blue hair. Hooray!

I am in a bit of a funk and I don't know why, maybe there is something to this Blue Monday business.

Julia and I are still not really speaking. I hope that time will end this. The tension is uncomfortable. I think she has hurt feelings and so do I. She doesn't want to let it go so....

Came home exhausted from a long strange day at work. I had a client tell me that she tried to poison her first husband. Was it wrong to ask
for details. I think not. All very interesting

Watched Man On Wire tonight. What a lovely movie. I highly recommend it. Very inspiring.

I sent out invitations to have a happy hour with some girlfriends next week. I miss some of the lovely ladies in my life. i am glad that i have such wonderful girlfriends and I don't want to take them for granted. So far 3 out of 5 are up for it. I am looking forward to catching up and having a few laughs.

Heading to bed with the sniffles. I have high hopes that it is allergies but I took some airborne just in case. I am not ready for another round of the sick. I know Mike is not ready for another round of sick wife.

    Sweet dreams.3

  2. Yesterday (the 21st) was a beautifully cold, crisp and sunshine-y day...too bad I didn't go outside except to take Zoë to school in the morning. Most of my day was spent moving many unpacked boxes of books up our new spiral staircase and trying to get our guest room ready for Martin's parents. My in-laws will be arriving this afternoon and I'm looking forward to it. Tjalling will be helping us paint the kitchen and the landing. Lidy will be helping us hem our old curtains for the new windows.
I brought in our patio furniture and cleaned it off so we'll have somewhere to eat besides the coffee table. I am definitely looking forward to getting new furniture when we're finished with all the renovations.

Even though I'm happily busy with getting settled in our new house, I'm already itching to get back to work. I am so relieved to be finally free of the restaurant... but now what? I would love to find a job in the travel/tourism industry again, similar to what I did in Portland at Avanti Destinations. Man, I loved that job! I'm hoping to use my contacts from Avanti to find something here in Belgium. Maybe with Thomas Cook? We'll see. I'm a bit nervous about going writing a resume and being interviewed in Dutch. My Dutch is good, but in new situations I don't have the best vocabulary. I think I may need to learn French as well. hmmm...

Enough for now. I want to drink my coffee and relax a bit before Martin's lovely, very energetic parents arrive. They'll be staying with us and helping out for a week and I'm grateful for that.

Oh ~ one last note. I peeked in on Zoë as she was asleep in her new bedroom. She was wearing a tiara in bed, my silly little princess.

  3. Today was SO much better than yesterday! Kids were up early and willing, for the most part, to be cooperative. Had some trouble with the youngest but she had to walk out of the house without socks and shoes on. She usually has to learn her lessons the hard way and I am not looking forward to her being a teenager, thank goodness we have several years before that happens (she is almost 5)!
Today my (almost) hubby cleaned the house after we watched some movies, Devil and Fight Club, and I worked on homework. Then he left to go do some lighting work for a play he is helping a friend with. I had forgotten almost all day that it is his 3 year anniversary of being sober and sent him a message telling him how proud I was that he made it this far. After last night I am SUPER proud of him...I wanted to drink! A LOT!
Made sure Trenton was taken care of as far as a ride home from school and then I was off to run errands, pick up check from temp agency, return camera that broke from Christmas, go to bank, then post office for stamps - unfortunately the car wouldn't start after the check pick up so I got NOTHING done...waited 45 min for car to attempt to start and when it didn't I called tow truck - thank goodness for roadside assistance! Much to my chagrin the car started about 5 minutes before the tow truck showed up but I had him tow my car home anyway, no sense in taking a chance on it stalling on the way home...taking Stella (my car) to the shop tomorrow, hope I can afford the fix!
Went to dinner with Richards ex in-laws and we were nervous about it but they kept the conversation light and away from the topic of his ex, surprisingly nice time - Mongolian BBQ...Yummy! Stuffed myself to the popping point as usual with those places.
Quiet night at home playing Family Feud on Facebook and another mystery game I am fond of then off to bed soon.

Tomorrow is looking busy but good, Richard gets his 3 year chip and I will be there to see him receive it - I am so proud!

  4. Sunny outside. Still sick, but mending.

Got out of bed and put on clothes for the outside world- Jack's Science Fair was today, and I didn't want to miss it. Wanted to take pics for the school, too. SFair was fun and impressive. I tried not to breathe on anyone. After it ended, we went to sign the loan papers on the house- the papers that set everything in motion. Here we go....

Dana and I took lunch across the street from the realty office at Shanghai- a place we used to eat at all the time when we lived in midtown. Just as delicious as I remember, and I was SO grateful to be putting something in my mouth besides chicken soup and tea! Not much of an appetite, though, so I have plenty of easy leftovers for the weekend.

Came home and did a little work, then tried to nap. Dana was really buried in work since we were out of the house so long, so it turned out I had to pick up Jack. Driving was not the easiest in my weak, fuzzy headed state, but I was careful. Decided to drop by the store on the way home for some treats and more tissue, and that really took the last of my strength away. Jack was a big help - picking up the house and starting dinner while Dana finished work and I napped again.

We all settled onto the couch to watch White Mane, a movie we picked up at the library. I cannot recommend this movie enough. Beautifully shot, and endearing. It's only 40 minutes long, from 1953, and by the same gentleman that did The Red Balloon. We indulged in Coconut Bliss 'ice cream', my treat from the store, and all headed to bed early. I worked a bit on my family tree at Ancestry.com while we caught up on Daily Show. Just before we fell asleep, we heard Jack get up and head into the kitchen.... I checked on him, and he was getting a glass of water. He said he heard we were watching a movie, and didn't want to bother us... This was the first time he didn't ask us for something when he woke up- just got it himself. His thoughtfullness is so amazing lately- a new level of maturity.
