January 2 1910

Weather threatening. We all spent the day with Aunt Wetzig and cousin Hannah. They gave Julia a set of tin chests, Johnny a harmonica, Wilhelmina a bell and Freddie a rubber ball.

Johnny is 4 years old today at exactly 11 o'clock today. We gave him a navy blue cheviot suit, russian style, trimmed in red.

Roads and winter so far worst on record.

  1. Morning started out lovely but ended with rain.

Made eggs benedict for breakfast and enjoyed having the whole family around the table.

Ace and I played Just Dance 2 and laughed and sweat until we collapsed on the sofa.

I went shopping for Julia's party tomorrow. Took care of the house and made salmon and salad for dinner.

I bought a door knob for our bedroom door. Ace installed it. Mike and I are very grown-up now having a closable door and all.

It's nice to have everyone home. I so desperately needed a few days off. I am starting to feel sane again.

Joined the Museum of Contemporary Art today. I think I will go tomorrow. I think I need art.

  2. Time for me to get back to school. I was able to look at my new class on Thursday and the first assignment in Sociology has to do with writing about 4 different subjects - one of them being unemployed and the effects on society, shouldn't be too difficult as I am living that scenario now. It has been drizzly and cold all day and look forward to the weather getting warm again, even though it is still early in the winter season.

Aside from school I am going to try and start doing more things for myself, I have a bunco group now and I will be playing on Tuesday, that is a good start.

  3. Weather, indeed, Julia- it has been as low as the 20's here in Sacramento, with rain and high wind and just generally not pleasant. But we have a fireplace and nothing to do outside of our house, so it's been quite lovely, actually.

New Year's Day has traditionally been jammy and movie day for us, but since we were coordinating the whole brunch thing yesterday with the studio storage mess, we continued our lack of attachment to established patterns and bumped the relaxation fest til today.

I put some apple cranberry porkchops and some veggies in the crockpot early on, and we settled into introducing Jack to the Marx Brothers. He was thrilled, and we all had some good laughs.

I spent most of the day writing- little last minute edits for school, a little for myself- and indulging in the various sweet treats gifted to us over the holidays. This is the last day of vacation, but I feel I've had a good relaxing break, so I'm not so upset to get back to work. I got a lot of practicalities crossed off my list- made an offer on a house, got all my tax figures in order so we can file as soon as we get the 1099s etc, did the budget for the new year, cleaned two carloads of donations and two rounds of recycling out of Jack's closet, purged various other areas of the house... And had many enjoyments as well- a massage, read two books, took naps, wrote a lot, had some fulfilling exchanges with friends, with my husband and son, and had so many good visits with people I love.

Speaking of, Max and his lovely lady stopped by for a sort of surprise visit tonight, and it was so fun to catch up with our rarely seen friends from the other side of the country. I think stop ins are the best, and greatly appreciate that level of friendship- it is rare and sacred. The Warming House- that's what I'd like to be.

My boys went to bed ages ago, and I am finally ready to drift off myself. The last embers of the fire have dimmed, the dog is snoring half heartedly, and I'm off....

Woke up refreshed and hungry. I have been insatiable. Maybe it’s the weather or the comfort of having my family around, but boy I just want to eat everything! Scotty made a kinder, gentler version of eggs benedict for breakfast. I had three-cups of PG Tips and then went to pick up my mom from her motel across town.
We visited the makeup counters in the downtown Macys on our way back to 35th Street. My mom and I share a love for vibrant-colored lipstick and classic perfumes. Chanel No.5 will always remind me of my mom. Maybe Schiap pink will always remind her of me, though I doubt it.
My mom bought a pork roast last night at the Nugget Market that she prepared for all of us with love and cabbage and apples, carrots, roasted potatoes and a sweet potato pie. We shared four bottles of wine, each one more delicious than the next. My mom and I also shared some of the best belly laughs I’ve had in a long time. I will miss her more than ever! Darn distance and time. However, I look forward to visiting her.
The kids go back to school tomorrow after a two week break. I think that they are both ready to see their friends and get back in to the routine. I, on the other hand, could use a two week break.
It’s 2:30 on Monday morning. I went to bed around 11 only to wake up from the worst dream ever. It was a simple, short dream. It was like this: Scotty and I had just received the news that we had lost both Sadie and Cooper to a horrible car accident. The pain in my heart was so, so, so unbearable that it woke me with tears and my heart still throbbing. I jumped out of bed to hold Cooper and Sadie who are sleeping snug in their beds, but kissed their sleeping heads instead. I pray I never have to feel that pain again. Now back to sleep.
